The best free link building tools in 2026 are Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free for your own links, Bing Webmaster Tools and Moz Link Explorer for competitor research, Hunter for contacts, and Screaming Frog for broken links. Together they cover the full workflow at $0, as long as you accept small monthly caps.
Most "best link building tools" lists are paid suites with a free trial bolted on. This one only includes tools you can keep using without a credit card, grouped by workflow stage. Every limit below was checked on the vendor's own page in October 2026.
Key takeaways
- You can run a complete link-building workflow (prospect, vet, contact, monitor) on free tools alone. The trade-off is time and small caps, not missing capability.
- Your own backlink data is free and unlimited in practice: Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free both show links to sites you verify.
- Competitor link data is where free tiers get thin. Moz gives 10 queries a month, Semrush gives 10 reports a day, and Bing shows backlinks for any site.
- Outreach is the hardest stage to do for free. Hunter's free plan gives 50 credits a month, which is enough for a small, targeted campaign and nothing more.
- AI assistants are good at drafting and sorting, not at building links. Google lists automated link creation as link spam.
Quick comparison: free link building tools at a glance
Free-tier limits are as of October 2026 and taken from each vendor's own pricing or product page. Vendors change these often, so recheck before you plan a campaign around a number.

What is the best free link building tool?
There is no single best link building tool, free or paid, because link building is five different jobs: prospecting, vetting, finding contacts, monitoring and writing. A tool that is excellent at one (Hunter for emails) is useless at another.
The useful question is which free link building tool covers each stage well enough. Everything on this list fills one of those gaps.
How we use these: we are a SaaS link-building team, and this is the stack we reach for when we vet publishers, check placements and audit our own site. We have not lab-tested every tool against every other; each entry covers what it is good for, its free limit, and the weakness we hit most.
Prospecting and finding host pages
Good link prospecting tools surface pages that are already about your topic, because a link on a relevant page beats a link on a strong but unrelated one.
1. Google search operators
Google itself is still the most flexible prospecting tool, and it costs nothing. Search operators narrow results to a site or a pattern. Queries like "payroll software" intitle:resources, "write for us" saas or site:example.com "customer onboarding" turn up resource pages, guest post targets and existing articles on a prospect's site.
Google documents the site: operator as a way to request results from one domain. It is the manual version of the method in our guide to finding link insertion opportunities by hand.
Free tier: unlimited, but every query is manual.
Honest limitation: Google says a site: query does not necessarily return every indexed URL, and you get zero metrics. Each result still needs vetting for traffic, age and outbound links.
2. Saaslinks Niche Edit Finder
This is our own tool, so weigh the description accordingly. The Niche Edit Finder does the site: search above across every vetted publisher in the Saaslinks network at once. You describe the page you want a link to in plain words, and it returns existing articles where that link fits.
Matching works on meaning as well as keywords, so "keeping subscribers from cancelling" also finds churn articles. Each result shows a 0 to 100 topic-match score, publish date, word count, existing outbound links, the site's DR and traffic, and the insertion price.
Free tier: free to search, no signup. Publisher domains are masked (for example "ma••••ap.io") until you create a free account.
Honest limitation: it only searches sites in the Saaslinks network, not the open web. If the right host page lives elsewhere, Google operators will find it and this will not.
3. Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools has a backlinks report that most SEOs forget about. Microsoft confirmed it would keep the report showing inbound links for any website, not only for the site you verified. That makes it one of the few genuinely free sources of competitor backlink lists.
We use it to pull the referring domains of two or three competitors and spot sites that link to all of them but not to us. Our guide on how to find competitor backlinks walks through that gap analysis step by step.
Free tier: free with a Microsoft account and a verified site of your own.
Honest limitation: the data comes from Bing's crawl, which is smaller than the big commercial indexes. Treat it as a strong sample, not a complete list.
4. Google Alerts
Google Alerts emails you when new search results match a topic. Set one alert for your brand name and one for your product or founder. Every article that mentions you without linking is a warm outreach target.
Google's Alerts help page shows you can set frequency, sources, language, region and how many results you want to see.
Free tier: free with any Google account.
Honest limitation: coverage is patchy and some alerts arrive late. It catches some mentions, not all of them.
5. Saaslinks Backlink Checker
Our second tool on the list. Enter any domain into the free backlink checker and it returns the site's Domain Rating, referring domains count and global rank on the spot. If you want the full list of linking pages with anchor text, it emails it to you after a quick email confirmation.
We use it as a first-pass sizing tool before spending a Moz query or a Semrush report on a competitor.
Free tier: no signup for the instant snapshot.
Honest limitation: the instant view is a summary, not a link list. For deep competitor analysis you still need the emailed report or another source.
Vetting and metrics
A prospect list is only useful once you cut it down by authority, traffic, age and link attributes.
6. Saaslinks DR Checker
The bulk DR checker returns a site's real Ahrefs Domain Rating on the 0 to 100 scale. Switch to bulk mode and paste up to 500 domains, then export the result as CSV. That is the fastest free way we know to sort a scraped prospect list by authority.
For the same list, our domain age lookup pulls registration dates straight from the registry over RDAP, 20 domains at a time. Young domains with suspiciously high DR are worth a closer look.
Free tier: no signup, no credits, bulk up to 500 domains.
Honest limitation: DR is one metric, and it can be inflated. A high DR with no organic traffic is a warning sign, not a green light, as our SaaS SEO tool stack explains in more depth.
7. Moz Link Explorer
Moz Link Explorer gives you backlink data plus Moz metrics, including Domain Authority, Page Authority and Spam Score. It is useful as a second opinion when one index says a domain is strong and your gut says otherwise.
Free tier: per Moz's Link Explorer page, you create an account, verify your email and get 10 free queries per month.
Honest limitation: 10 queries is a tiny budget. Save it for the handful of domains you are about to pay for or pitch seriously, not for browsing.
8. Semrush free account
A free Semrush account opens Backlink Analytics and the rest of the suite, with tight daily caps. It is a useful seo link building tool for the occasional deep look at a competitor's new and lost links or anchor text spread.
Free tier: Semrush's plan comparison lists 10 reports per day across its main tools and 1 demo project, with no payment method required.
Honest limitation: the free account is designed as a trial of the paid product. Expect truncated tables and frequent upgrade prompts, so plan exactly which 10 reports you need before you start.
9. Saaslinks Dofollow / Nofollow Checker
Paste any URL into the dofollow checker and it classifies every link on that page as dofollow or nofollow. It flags rel="sponsored" and rel="ugc" separately and splits internal links from external ones, with CSV export.
We use it before buying (does this publisher nofollow every outbound link?) and after a placement goes live. Google's guidance on qualifying outbound links explains what each attribute means.
Free tier: no signup, no credits.
Honest limitation: it reads one page at a time. To audit link attributes across a whole site, a crawler like Screaming Frog is the better fit.
Outreach and contacts
Outreach is where free tiers are weakest. Free tools here suit small, targeted campaigns, which is how SaaS link building should run anyway.
10. Hunter
Hunter finds email addresses by domain or by name and verifies whether they are deliverable. For link building, it answers the most common blocker in outreach: who actually edits this page, and how do I reach them?
Free tier: Hunter's pricing page lists 50 credits per month on the Free plan. An email found costs 1 credit and a verification costs half a credit, and searches that find nothing are not charged.
Honest limitation: 50 credits is about 50 contacts a month. That is plenty for a personalized campaign to 20 or 30 high-fit sites, and nowhere near enough for volume outreach.
A note on what we left out: outreach suites such as BuzzStream, Pitchbox and Respona appear on most lists, but we could not confirm an ongoing free plan for any of them on their own sites. They may offer trials or demos. They are not free tools.
Monitoring and cleanup
Links you have built need watching. Pages get updated, and links get removed or switched to nofollow.
11. Google Search Console
Search Console's Links report is the only first-party view of how Google sees links to your site. It shows top linked pages, top linking sites and top linking text. Our walkthrough of checking backlinks in Google covers where each report hides.
Free tier: free for any site you verify. Google's Links report documentation says tables are limited to 1,000 rows, and exports can include up to 100,000 rows.
Honest limitation: Google states the report shows a sample of links, not every link. It also only covers sites you own, so it is no help for competitor research.
12. Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools)
Ahrefs has renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools to Ahrefs Free. It gives you Site Explorer backlink data and Site Audit for any site you verify, on Ahrefs' own index, which is far larger than what Search Console shows you.
Free tier: per the Ahrefs Free page, unlimited verified websites, up to 1,000 backlinks visible at once, and 5,000 Site Audit crawl credits per verified project per month.
Honest limitation: it only works on sites you can verify. You cannot point it at a competitor, and very large link profiles get cut off at the 1,000-row view.
13. Screaming Frog SEO Spider
Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler, and its free version is the most capable broken link building tool you can get without paying. Crawl a resource page or a whole competitor blog, filter for 404s, and you have a list of dead links that your content could replace.
Run it on your own site too: broken pages that still have backlinks pointing at them are wasted equity.
Free tier: the SEO Spider page lists a 500 URL crawl limit for the free version, with broken links, errors and redirects included.
Honest limitation: the page also says JavaScript rendering, crawl configuration and saving crawls are restricted in the free version. 500 URLs covers a resource page or a small blog, not a large site.
For a single page, our broken link checker tests up to 40 links on one URL in your browser, with no install, and separates truly broken links from ones a site is merely blocking.
AI assistants for link building
AI link building tools get a lot of hype. A chat assistant cannot get you a link, but it can save hours on the writing and sorting around one.
Google is explicit here: its link spam policy lists "using automated programs or services to create links to your site" as a violation. Use AI to think and draft, and keep a human on every send.
14. Claude (free plan)
Anthropic's free Claude plan includes chat, web search, file creation and up to 5 Projects. For link building we use it to draft first versions of outreach emails, summarize a prospect's last ten articles so a pitch can reference something real, and sort a CSV of prospects by topic fit.
Free tier: per Claude's pricing page, usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, with no fixed message count.
Honest limitation: it does not know a site's traffic, DR or who edits it unless you give it that data. Any metric it states without a source should be treated as a guess.
15. ChatGPT (free plan)
OpenAI's free ChatGPT plan does the same drafting and sorting jobs. It is good for rewriting a pitch three ways, cleaning up a messy list, or brainstorming linkable asset ideas.
Free tier: free to use, with separate usage caps on file uploads and other tools. OpenAI changes the free model and its limits often, so we do not quote a number here.
Honest limitation: the same as Claude. It writes fluent, confident text about sites it has never checked. If you want a fuller playbook, our guide to link building with an AI agent covers where to draw the line.
How to combine free link prospecting tools into one workflow
Tools only help when they hand off cleanly. This is the order we run them in for a single target page:
- Define the page. Write one plain sentence about what the target page offers. That sentence feeds every search below.
- Find candidates. Run Google operators, search the Niche Edit Finder, and pull competitor referring domains from Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Cut by authority. Paste every domain into the bulk DR checker and drop anything below your floor.
- Cut by risk. Check domain age, then spend Moz or Semrush queries only on the shortlist.
- Check the actual page. Confirm topical fit, real traffic and outbound link count on the exact URL, not the domain. Our guide to contextual backlinks explains why the surrounding text matters.
- Find the contact. Use Hunter credits only on sites that survived steps 3 to 5.
- Draft, then personalize. Let Claude or ChatGPT write a first draft, then rewrite the opening line by hand.
- Verify and monitor. Check the live link with the dofollow checker, then watch it in Search Console and Ahrefs Free.
When free tools stop being enough
Free tools cover the workflow. What they do not cover is time: a careful free-tool campaign for one target page can take a full day before a single email goes out.
Teams usually outgrow free tools when they need competitor data daily, when outreach passes 50 Hunter credits a month, or when the founder's time becomes the expensive part. Then the choice is a paid suite, a freelancer, or buying vetted placements through monthly link building packages. A paid suite still needs someone to do the work; buying placements skips outreach but costs per link.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tool for link building?
No single tool covers every stage. For most teams the answer is a combination: one backlink data source (Ahrefs or Semrush if paid, Bing Webmaster Tools and Moz if free), a contact finder like Hunter, and a crawler like Screaming Frog.
What is the best free link building tool in 2026?
For your own site, Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free are the strongest free options, since both show real backlink data for verified sites. For competitor research, Bing Webmaster Tools is the most useful free source because it shows backlinks for any website. Every free-tier limit in this guide was checked in October 2026.
Where can I get free backlinks?
The most reliable free backlinks come from reclaiming unlinked brand mentions (Google Alerts finds them), replacing broken links on relevant pages (Screaming Frog finds them), and listing your product on genuine directories and review sites. Avoid "free backlink generator" sites that create links automatically, because Google classifies automated link creation as link spam.
What is the best free backlink checker?
For your own site, Google Search Console is the most trustworthy because it shows links Google itself has found, though only a sample. For any other site, Bing Webmaster Tools, Moz Link Explorer (10 free queries a month) and the Saaslinks Backlink Checker each give a free view. Cross-check at least two, since every index misses links.
Can AI tools do link building?
AI tools can help with link building but cannot do it on their own. Assistants like Claude and ChatGPT are useful for drafting outreach, summarizing a prospect's content and sorting lists. Google's spam policies list automated link creation as a violation, so a human should still choose targets and send every email.
Is a link building tool free forever, or just a trial?
It depends on the vendor. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs Free, Hunter's Free plan, Moz Link Explorer and Screaming Frog's free version are ongoing free tiers. Many outreach suites only offer a trial or a demo, which is why they are not on this list.
The bottom line
You do not need a paid suite to start building links. Free link building tools cover prospecting, vetting, outreach and monitoring, and the caps are generous enough for a focused SaaS campaign.
Start with Search Console and Ahrefs Free to see what you already have, use Bing Webmaster Tools to see what competitors have, and spend your scarce free queries only on shortlisted sites. If you want link insertion targets without the manual site: searches, search existing articles by topic and judge each placement before you commit.
Buy vetted SaaS backlinks, simply.
Skip the outreach grind. Browse real-traffic sites, see every metric with its source, and track each link to indexed, with a 30-day guarantee.
